Instantly and Smartlead, compared on what actually differs

Illustration contrasting two figures for the same plan: Smartlead's own pricing page lists 90,000 monthly emails on its Pro tier, while Instantly's comparison page describes that tier as 150,000.

You have both pricing pages open and a comparison article in a third tab. Check the byline on that third tab before you read it, because on this query two of the top three results are published by Instantly.

The short version, from both vendors' own pages read on 10 September 2026: neither charges per mailbox, both meter the same two things, and at the entry tier Smartlead is cheaper and gives you more of both. At the volume one person sends by hand, only one of those two meters can ever bind you, and the rest of the difference is warmup and what sits beside the sending plan.

Neither one charges per mailbox

This is the first thing most comparisons get wrong, and both vendors are explicit about it.

Instantly lists "Unlimited Email Accounts" as the first bullet on every Outreach plan, and its pricing FAQ says you can connect and warm as many accounts as you need from any provider. Smartlead's pricing FAQ answers the question directly: all Smartlead plans include unlimited email accounts at no extra cost.

Worth knowing because the word "Unlimited" in Smartlead's plan names means something else. Unlimited Smart and Unlimited Prime refer to contacts stored, not mailboxes. Mailboxes are unlimited on Base too.

What each one actually meters

Both cap leads stored and emails sent per month. Those are the two numbers that decide which plan you need.

Read at source on 10 September 2026. Check the date on any comparison you read, including this one, and check which billing toggle its prices came from, because the monthly and annual columns differ by 17% on one of these pages and 20% on the other.

Up the ladder, Instantly runs $97 a month for 25,000 contacts and 125,000 emails, then $358 for 100,000 and 500,000. Smartlead runs $94 for 30,000 contacts and 90,000 emails, then $174 for unlimited contacts and 150,000 emails, then $379 for 500,000 emails. On annual billing Smartlead's three become $78.30, $144.50 and $314.60, and Instantly's two become $77.60 and $286.30.

One line on Smartlead's table has no equivalent on Instantly's sending plans: verified prospect emails, 2,000 on Base and 30,000 on Pro with a $59 a month add-on line against the row, and 50,000 and 170,000 on the two Unlimited plans with no add-on charge. Smartlead's page does not say what the add-on buys. Instantly sells its lead database separately, on its own credit ladder starting at $47 a month, so on both platforms the data is a second purchase whichever way you go.

Warmup is on both, and graded on one

Instantly bundles it flat. Every Outreach plan says "Unlimited Email Warmup", and Instantly describes a pool of over 1,000,000 real email accounts, with an option that makes its system scroll through your warmup emails to emulate human-like reading.

Smartlead includes warmup on every tier and grades it: Base gets the "Foundation tier" pool, Pro the "Growth tier", and the top two plans "Premium", marked eligible for a separate Ultra Premium product. Smartlead publishes no pool size. Its description of the mechanism is unusually plain: its AI sends, opens and replies to warm-up emails, moving them from spam to the inbox.

So the axis is not whether you get warmup. It is that on Smartlead the quality of the pool is a function of the plan you bought, and Smartlead does not publish what the difference between those tiers actually is.

The claims neither of them can back

Instantly prints three numbers next to its plans and again beside its warmup testimonials: 30% higher inbox placement, 4X increase in reply rates, 2X faster to start a campaign. On both pages they are attached to named individual customers. There is no sample size, no time window, no control, and no statement of what the 30% is higher than.

Smartlead prints no percentage at all. Its SmartDelivery product refers to a placement rate as an expert-vetted industry benchmark and publishes no number, no seed-list size and no denominator.

Neither position is better than the other for a buyer. An unfalsifiable number and a missing number are the same information. If placement is what you are buying on, test it on your own domain rather than on either page, and remember that a reply-rate claim with no denominator is not a reply rate in any sense you can act on.

Who wrote the comparison you are reading

On this query, two of the top three organic results are Instantly's own pages, and ZoomInfo holds another slot. That is the shape of the shelf and it is not a scandal by itself. What matters is whether the vendor pages are accurate about the competitor.

One of them is not. Instantly's comparison page describes Smartlead's Pro tier as 150,000 monthly emails. Smartlead's own pricing page lists Pro at 90,000. The 150,000 figure belongs to Unlimited Smart, one tier and $80 a month higher. A buyer comparing plans on that page is being shown a Smartlead tier that costs more than the one being named.

Of the five independent-looking comparisons on page one, none carries an affiliate disclosure, an affiliate link or a referral parameter that we could find. What is true of all five is that each publisher sells a competing product of its own, and four of the five steer to it. That is not a reason to discount what they say. It is a reason to check every number against the vendor's own page, which is how the 150,000 came up.

Which one, for one person

Start with the arithmetic that decides it. At 30 to 100 emails a day across 22 working days you send between 660 and 2,200 a month, and both entry plans give you 5,000 or 6,000. You will not come near either send cap, which means the send cap is not a reason to choose between them and not a reason to buy a tier above either.

What can bind you is the contacts cap, at 1,000 on Instantly Growth and 2,000 on Smartlead Base, because that counts everyone you have ever uploaded rather than everyone you mailed this month.

If you are sending by hand from a handful of mailboxes, buy on the two metered units and ignore everything else. Smartlead Base gives you twice the contacts for $8 a month less, or $5.10 less on annual billing, and the contacts cap is the one that can actually bind you. Instantly Growth gives you a warmup pool whose size is at least published, and an inclusion that does not change with the plan you buy.

Neither of those differences will decide your quarter. Both platforms send; the account you are trying to reach cannot tell which one you used. What decides the quarter is who is on the list and whether those addresses are real, which is a question about your data rather than your sender, and the arithmetic of what a free tier actually delivers is the closer comparison to run before you pick either.

Frequently asked

Does Instantly or Smartlead charge per mailbox?
Neither. Instantly lists unlimited email accounts on every Outreach plan and its FAQ states you can connect and warm as many accounts as you need. Smartlead's FAQ answers the same question with a plain no, saying all plans include unlimited email accounts at no extra cost.
Which is cheaper at the entry tier?
Smartlead, on both billing terms and on both metered units. Base is $39 a month or $32.50 billed annually, with 2,000 contacts and 6,000 monthly sends. Instantly Growth is $47 a month or $37.60 billed annually, with 1,000 contacts and 5,000 sends. Prices read at source on 10 September 2026.
Is warmup included on Smartlead's cheapest plan?
Yes, and it is graded by plan. Smartlead's pricing table shows a warmup pool on every tier, labelled Foundation on Base, Growth on Pro, and Premium on the two Unlimited plans. Smartlead does not publish what separates those pools or how large any of them is.
What does "Unlimited" mean in Smartlead's plan names?
Contacts stored. Unlimited Smart and Unlimited Prime lift the contacts cap; both still cap emails per month, at 150,000 and 500,000. Mailboxes are unlimited on every Smartlead plan including Base.
Do either of them publish real deliverability numbers?
No. Instantly prints 30% higher inbox placement and a 4X increase in reply rates next to named customers, with no sample, no period and no baseline. Smartlead prints no placement percentage anywhere and refers to a placement rate without a number attached.
Are the comparison articles ranking for this query trustworthy?
Read them with the vendor pages open. Two of the top three organic results are published by Instantly, and Instantly's comparison page states Smartlead's Pro tier as 150,000 monthly emails when Smartlead's own page lists 90,000. Among the five independent-looking comparisons, none carries an affiliate disclosure, and every publisher sells a competing product.
